Abstract: This thesis analyses the fundamental effects of WWII on the first and second generation of abstract expressionism and the novel Catch-22. The first chapter gives information on the historical background of the World War-II period which the paintings were produced and the novel was written, and clarifies the aim and methodology of the study. The following chapters analyze the historical background, cultural aspects, human psychology, philosophical influences of the war by combining their impact on First and Second Generation of Abstract Expressionism and the novel Catch-22. The conclusion presents the aim of the thesis and depicts the impact of the war and its conclusions over the works of art and Catch-22.
