Abstract: | Following the devastating earthquakes that took place in the Marmara Region on 17 August and 12 November, 1999, awareness of the fact that Istanbul continues to face the likelihood of a major earthquake became more intense. It is estimated that damage caused by a severe earthquake in Istanbul would cause a disaster that cannot be compensated for in terms of human life, as well as unmanageable loss with respect to physical structures, socioeconomic dimensions, and the environment. The earthquake expected in Istanbul will cause the most damage in the southern parts of both the European and the Anatolian portions of the city, where recent construction is most concentrated. This study includes an analysis of the natural resources of 12 districts (Avcilar, Bagcilar, Bahcelievler, Bakirkoy, Beylikduzu, Esenyurt, Fatih, Gungoren, Kucukcekmece Zeytinburnu, Esenler, and Bayrampasa) located in the south of Istanbul on the European side where, according to field studies, the earthquake risk is estimated to be higher. Suggestions are also provided based on a comparison of the appropriate population size and distribution, according to the 1/5000 Master Plan for this region, and the existing population. |
